Classic Manicure and Pedicure: Why the Basics Still Matter

Professional manicure and nail care
In this article

There is a tendency to treat the classic manicure as the less interesting option — something you get when you cannot decide, or when the gel appointment is already booked. That undersells it. A well-executed classic manicure is precise, restorative, and does things for nail health that no colour formula can.

What a Professional Manicure Includes

A professional manicure is not just polish application. It follows a specific sequence, and each step serves a purpose.

Nail shaping comes first — filing to your chosen shape (square, round, oval, almond, coffin) with a technique that does not stress the nail plate at the sides. Filing in one direction, not sawing back and forth, preserves the integrity of the free edge.

Cuticle care is where the health benefit lives. Cuticles protect the nail matrix — the living tissue at the base of the nail from which the plate grows. Dry, overgrown cuticles are pushed back and gently removed using a cuticle remover and a wooden stick or nippers. No aggressive cutting, no drawing blood. The goal is a clean nail plate and a healthy cuticle line, not the complete removal of tissue that exists for a reason.

Exfoliation and massage follow. A hand scrub removes dead skin from the surface; massage improves circulation and works the product into the skin and joints. This is where the appointment stops being maintenance and starts being something you notice for the rest of the day.

Polish application closes the service: base coat, two colour coats, topcoat, each given time to settle before the next. Air-dried polish needs time — the classic manicure is not for people who need to leave immediately.

What a Pedicure Includes

A pedicure runs longer than a manicure and covers more ground. The feet soak to soften skin, which makes the subsequent work more effective. A foot file or callus remover addresses built-up hardness on the heels and balls of the feet — not to remove all protective callus, but to reduce the cracking and roughness that accumulates with barefoot living. Exfoliation follows, then a massage working from the calves down, finishing with nail shaping and polish.

The soak, the exfoliation, and the massage are not optional extras. They are what separates a professional pedicure from painting your toenails.

Why Regular Nail Care Matters

Cuticle health is directly connected to nail growth quality. Neglected cuticles dry out, crack, and can become sites of infection — hangnails are a minor version of this. Regular cuticle care keeps the nail matrix protected and promotes even, healthy growth.

Ingrown nails are another concern that proper technique prevents. Filing nails with the right shape for the nail bed, and never cutting too short at the corners, eliminates most of the conditions that cause ingrowth. Toenails are particularly prone to this, especially in people who wear tight footwear.

Bali Is Hard on Feet

In Uluwatu and across Bali, footwear is minimal. Flip-flops, bare feet on warm tile, sandals to dinner. Feet are on display constantly, which is one reason, but the more practical one is what the environment does: salt residue from the ocean dries out skin, beach sand acts as an abrasive, and the heat means feet sweat more and skin thickens faster. A month in Bali without a pedicure leaves feet in noticeably worse shape than a month anywhere else.

The skincare guide for Bali's climate covers the same environmental forces from a skin perspective — the principles are nearly identical.

Classic or Gel: When to Choose Which

Classic polish is the right choice when you want something temporary — colour that you can remove at home, a treatment polish like a strengthener or base coat, or simply a less involved appointment. It is also the better option during a nail recovery period: if you have been wearing gel nails for several consecutive appointments and want to give your nails some time without a cured coating.

Gel is the right choice when you need longevity — two to three weeks without chips in Bali's climate, through pool days and ocean swims. The two services serve different purposes and are not in competition.

Hygiene Standards

A professional nail salon sterilises metal tools between clients — not wipes them, sterilises them. Files and buffers are single-use or assigned to a named client and not reused on others. Foot soaking bowls are lined with a fresh disposable liner or sanitised between uses.

These are not luxury standards. They are the baseline. Nail services that skip tool sterilisation create genuine infection risk, particularly for cuticle work and pedicures where skin is softened and tools come into contact with living tissue. It is worth asking about these practices before you sit down.
